Rustomjee Cambridge International School has locations at Dahisar, Thane and Virar. It is regarded as one of the best schools in Mumbai for the quality of Education.

Drawbacks on not having music education in schools:

Music plays a big part in the overall development of children. Any kind of music, be it singing or playing some instruments helps kids to be focused and calm. It's one of the best hobbies for a child to develop. Not having music as part of schooling is not good for the child's development as it could deprive them of so many benefits.

Challenges the school may have faced earlier with music education:

With limited resources, developing a liking for music among kids is difficult. Some kids like singing, some like playing a musical instrument. Catering to all their needs becomes a challenge for school. Getting good musically educated teachers to teach is rare as music is still not treated as a good career option.

How did FSM's LearnBuddy Program help?

The LearnBuddy Program is an overall package. Kids of all ages and interests benefit from these programs. Kids who like to sing can sing, and those who like to play any musical instrument can do that as well. So there is no chance for kids to get bored. Keeping them engaged is very easy because of the interactive and fun video led teaching method. Kids always want more at the end of each lecture. That shows how interested they are in the program.

Seven Rivers International School is the flagship international school by The Acres Foundation (known for The Green Acres academy schools). The school started as a Cambridge International School in 2019. We currently have Early Years Cambridge Primary and will grow into a K-12 school.

At Seven Rivers International School, we believe that a powerful education can raise a generation of students who are changemakers. Students who are equipped to grow as successful individuals who know how to pursue their own dreams and who can together be a force to bring a positive change in their communities, cities, countries, and the world.

In order to achieve our vision, we focus on three specific areas-

The first and the most obvious - is that the student needs to have competencies that help effectively perform tasks in the 21st century i.e. knowledge and skills in a variety of domains, that includes, language and literacy, numeracy, sciences, and social sciences. artistic competencies (music, visual arts, dance, drama), physical education and wellbeing, socio-emotional learning, different forms of Technology. These are the building blocks to becoming experts in any field of work.

The second area is Global Citizenship, we view our students as global citizens which means along with pursuing their dreams, our students have a moral compass and strong values to guide them through their choices in life. We see them as students who thrive in their families, communities, country, and world. The Cambridge Global perspectives and our own citizenship program ensure our students start building this essential mindset through their foundational years at school.

And finally, we need them to build Personal Leadership, the stepping stones of which are provided by our LEAPED Program that includes Leadership, Ethics, and Awareness of Personal & Emotional Development. We want our students to believe that when they set their goals through focus, hard work, growth mindset, grit, and perseverance they can achieve them.

Drawbacks on not having music education in schools:

1. I don’t think we can call learning holistic if we don’t have music learning at school. Without basic music education, children miss out on essential skills and sensibility towards an important element of living and not just learning.

2. Multiple research studies state how music education helps in the overall development of the child including reading, mathematics, and other academic learning.

3. Music at school engages students in learning together and participating in concerts or bands as a group that in turn makes them learn to be sociable and learn to work together towards a common goal. Without music education, this does get impacted as the students miss working together for a performance and have a sense of group achievement.

4. It naturally adds interdisciplinary connections to core learning with reading, speaking, mathematics design to name a few. Without music teaching, students miss out on certain applications of learning.

Challenges the school may have faced earlier with music education:

1. Like any Arts form music is a diverse field that transcends through cultural, social, and academic areas. For schools, it’s challenging to decide what to prioritize in teaching music. In the younger years, it’s important to build a connection and basic understanding of music for children. Should music be taught only as exposure or should students learn in-depth skills in one area?

2. Most people who pursue music mostly pursue to practice music and not teach music, even their music learning is mostly learning in one specific area. When we want to teach students at school, we want to expose them to a range of music learning and that becomes challenging to get teachers who have broad knowledge and skills in music.

3. Alongside knowledge of music, it's also important for teachers to have knowledge of pedagogical practices to create music learning engaging and meaningful for different student age groups. This is a critical area for schools to make music learning a success.

4. Even when we have expert teachers at school, there is always a lack of time schools can give to music teaching, music learning in any form needs consistent and continuous practice, music teachers always feel they need more time both to teach and for students to be able to practice.

How did FSM's LearnBuddy Program help?

We started using “FSM learn buddy” and “FSM music is fun” from Furtados school of music as our music teaching partner at school from July 2021. They provide us with a curriculum for the year coupled with the online tool “learn buddy” with inbuilt tutorials to teach the songs and also recruited a music teacher for us.

The “FSM learn buddy” is an online tool that helps scaffold music teaching balancing both skills and theory. The tool is accessible to students using a personal ID so the songs taught are assigned to students to learn and practice out of class and this will speed up teaching and learning of music.

The teacher was trained as per the curriculum and the online tool, we also could select the teacher as per our school requirements. The teacher is trained in a 5-day training and they are happy to give additional training when required. For a school where we would generally have just one or two music teachers, this is a great help for the teachers as they have a good support system from FSM. The sessions are planned in a way to keep the children active and engaged at all times.

As school is currently running online, for our music concert FSM edited music videos and the outcome was really wonderful. We have just spent one term with them, in term two we start with the piano program. I feel confident we are able to teach and expose students to a good and genuine music learning experience. Our students enjoy the music lessons and we are really happy to partner with them.

A. Overview

Instrument learning programs for schools provide a comprehensive and intensive workout for the brain. It light8 up the Visual, Auditory and Motor parts of the brain simultaneously which results in the overall strengthening of the brain and in turn helps students excel in so many other academic activities. Music programs for schools also help boost cognitive and non-cognitive skills in children more than twice as much as other extracurricular activities for schools like sports, theater or dance.

Music education in schools needs to have a standardized curriculum bundled with effective communication. Our program is video led - interactive and enriched with animation. This ensures that students are engaged thereby ensuring effective learning. Our instrument learning programs for schools have standardized lesson delivery which ensures that the teaching quality is of a very high standard and that we deliver very definite and structured learning outcomes.

Yes we can provide instruments - either on rent or your school can purchase them. We provide a Music Lab setup option (at an added fee) where we will assist and set-up the same for you. This can definitely be done depending on your requirements and availability of space.

If your school opts to purchase the instruments, your school itself will have to look after maintenance of the instruments.

Just as is done with all the other extracurricular activities for schools, at the end of the year, your music students too will showcase their learning through an annual recital. This is where, as an ensemble, they will perform the various songs they’ve learned. This can be presented in a manner of your choice - as an annual musical show that parents and faculty can be a part of or in a more informal setting, eg. in the classroom.

C) Pre-Primary

Absolutely! The curriculum is designed keeping in mind the kids school music program where we give a lot of importance to the bond shared by a child (at that age) with their teacher. Thus the teacher is given ample support to execute the program which includes exhaustive training sessions, detailed lesson plans with explicit instructions and a support hub where they can reach out anytime they have doubts or queries.

Our PreSchool Program has been designed based on Dalcroze’s method which encourages music, movement and experiential way of learning. Each of the carefully planned lessons have cross cutting learning concepts that establish strong musical learning and support general academic learning thus enabling the child to have a holistic development. To add to that, our program is age appropriate and follows the latest international good teaching and learning practices.

In addition to the training and music school curriculum resources, we also conduct mid year reviews to understand if the curriculum is moving in the right direction. Post the review refresher training is conducted if deemed necessary. Learning communities are created to help teachers clear doubt and ensure seamless learning.

NEP and FSM

Excerpts from the National Education Policy 2020.

Pedagogy must evolve to make education more experiential, holistic, integrated, inquiry-driven,
discovery-oriented, learner-centered, discussion-based, flexible, and, of course, enjoyable”.

“The arts form a major medium for imparting culture. The arts - besides strengthening cultural identity, awareness, and uplifting societies - are well known to enhance cognitive and creative abilities in
individuals and increase individual happiness”.

Drawbacks on not having music education in schools:

“A number of initiatives to foster languages, arts, and culture in school children have been discussed in Chapter 4, which include a greater emphasis on music, arts, and crafts throughout all levels of school . . . . a much greater flexibility in the curriculum, especially in secondary schools and in higher education, so that students can choose the ideal balance among courses for themselves to develop their own creative, artistic, cultural, and academic paths.”

“While education will play a critical role in this transformation, technology itself will play an important role in the improvement of educational processes and outcomes; thus, the relationship between technology and education at all levels is bi- directional.”

At FSM, we wholeheartedly support the government's move to take education to the next level and we are extremely happy to note that all our thoughts, planning and design are well in-sync with the NEP 2020!

Our curriculum and pedagogy takes into account - experiential learning, holistic education and is very much centered around the learner. And of course, everything rides on the back of one of the most important things we believe in - making the subject extremely enjoyable for your student!
